YouTube Red! Paying for Free Stuff

Youtube released a new subscription service that allows users to slide past ads, download videos for offline usage, and listen to Youtube while your phone is locked. This subscription is called YouTubeRed.

Even after it has been released, many Youtubers still dislike YouTube’s decision to make YouTubeRed. Many believe it is a waste of money and that it is pointless to have. People say that they would rather just deal with the ads than to pay for the $10 a month to be ad-free.  Sadly, if you have iOS products, the subscription cost rises by $3.

Some students question what Google was thinking when they made YouTube Red. Kay Davis, a student who frequently watches Youtube, said, “I think YouTube is trying to get money from people and they’re going to start losing people if they make videos exclusive to YouTube Red.”  As of the time of this article, a survey of 32 students yielded no subscribers to YoutubeRed, though two students said that they were going to subscribe.

Although some dislike it, it is hard to face the facts. YouTube Red is one of the top-grossing apps on the market. With it its sub count steadily growing with about 950 subscriptions per day, YouTube Red is seriously ranking in money for Google.

Mrs. Panagos, the multimedia design teacher, said, “I think it’s a natural evolution for modern broadcasting. If there’s content that appeals to you, you’ll buy it. I already do this with Apple TV and Netflix. Why would I be upset for paying for quality content?” With Youtube Red’s ability to listen to music in the background, it is starting to compete with SoundCloud and other large music applications.

But the real question is, Will current Youtube users actually get a subscription to YouTube Red?

Even though that most decide not to get the ad-free subscription from YouTube Red, the numbers show that someone somewhere is subscribing to it. Getting it free for a month works in YoutubeRed’s favor.
