There’s a new speedy activity in town, and Bob Jones is heavily involved as usual. It is called Greenpower Racing and Bob Jones Engineering formed a team of their own to participate. Engineering teacher, Mrs. Gaines, provided her students with forms to get involved and many were interested. The group formed a team and got down to business, beginning their planning for the races they would compete in this year.

Senior Amy Zari said, “We have had meetings every week since last year and we had to work really hard especially in the last few months to meet the deadline of our first race, which was April 2nd, so we had to increase our meetings to twice a week and sometimes had “build-a-thons” on Sundays where we would work non-stop on the car.” This activity was extremely hands on and allowed students to learn first hand from trial and error while working on the car they would race.

Zari’s role on the team was mainly to document the team’s progress through photography and she created the team website, insert site here. Zari said, “I’ve learned more about mechanics and the different aspects of engineering that go into a formula race car.”

WHNT covered the Mad City Electric Vehicle Race that the BJHS team participated in, and won first place.

Senior Katie Kovach was also a part of the team. She is a member of Mrs. Gaines’ engineering internship class at Bob Jones, just like Zari. Kovach’s role was project manager, and was the overall leader of the operation. She said, “Nowadays, experience is the most valuable thing a student can have. There is only so much we can learn in a classroom and [Greenpower] gives us the opportunity to learn through doing.”

The driver of the team’s car was Darshil Choski for their race on April 2nd at James Clemens High School. He led the team to their first place win.
