Texas has a history of rebelling against nations to form its own, self-sufficient government. Now, with the reelection of Barack Obama, the citizens of Texas and of the United States are petititoning to let Texas form its own new government. Petitions on whitehouse.gov are required to have 25,000 signatures for the Obama adminiatration to recognize the petition and respond to it. The petition for Texas to secede is currently at 114,696 signatures and counting.
Texas would definitely have the qualifications of being able to succeed if they secede; they have done it before. Texas was originally part of Mexico, but after American expansion into the area for farming, Texas realized its capability to succeed on its own. Of course, Mexico didn’t take too kindly to this and war broke out. But Texas, with much determination, stuck it to the oppressive Mexican government and became the Republic of Texas. Eventually, Texas, hesitantly joined the United States of America.
Many statistics show Texas alone has the 15th largest economy in the world, which proves that it may be able to flourish under its own new government. “If any state in the Union could make it on their own, it would be Texas,” stated senior Kyle Campbell. But economics is only half the battle: secession would not sit well with America, just like it didn’t with Mexico. America might cut off all trade with Texas, and Texas would then be at odds in competition with America for foreign trade. That scenario is hypothetical, of course.
Many think its an extreme measure with no real backbone.
