An Oculus Rift in the House

Mrs. Rountree’s Computer Science Principles class had a hands-on learning experience today.  They got their hands on an Oculus Rift and experienced the reality of virtual reality.

“I’m about to step in water,” said Alex Bartholomae, a sophomore, as he tried out the device.

After a week-long research project on the technology behind the device, Mrs. Rountree arranged an experience with her current students by networking with a former student.  Luc Burhop, the former BJ Patriot and current UAH Charger, interns at SMAP; SMAP is developing software for the Oculus Rift.

“I think the fact that the kids researched ahead of time generated enthusiasm for the product,” said Mrs. Rountree.  “The class had good questions.”

Though the device hasn’t gone mainstream, student participation was high.  When offered, the majority of students in neighboring classes didn’t hesitate to jump on the chance to see an Oculus Rift in action.
