Math Team: The Best of the Best

At this school, we are winners in more than just sports. For instance, Bob Jones Math Team is one of the best around! Every Wednesday after school in  N112 the Math Team members gather together and prepare for competition.

It is true that not many students are a fan of math. According to the survey, 61.5% students answered they don’t enjoy doing the math, and 80% of students found math to be too complicated. Mrs.Cox, a math teacher at Bob Jones, said, “There are students that see mathematics as a series of steps and rules and completely miss the beauty and puzzles of mathematics.”

Bob Jones Math Team does well in almost every competition and ranks Top 10 in the state. So how do they prepare for the competition? Achieving a high ranking does not come without rigorous practice. One member said, “There really is no substitute for practice. We meet and practice together, but the most competitive members take advantage of organized resources to practice on their own.”

Aditi Limaye, a junior on the Math Team, commented,“It’s fun and being with friends makes more worthwhile.” Kate Han, a junior on the math team also commented that “by joining math team I learn from my mistakes, and I’ve never had trouble in any of my math classes because  I gained the ability to learn and digest the new math skills very quickly.”

Participating in Math Team gives members the opportunity to earn scholarships for winning awards. Being a part of the math team also helps students taking the SAT, ACT, or even GRE by learning shortcut and strategies behind difficult word problems.

Mrs. Cox said, “Math team is a great place to enjoy and explore mathematics with other students. The problems we solve are often complex and rewarding. I think the reasoning and strategies we use are helpful on other standardized tests as well.”
