The results of the school-wide Poetry Out Loud contest are in!

Students earn cash and scholarship money through this competition. The official site states, “Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.”

The school contest was organized by Mrs. Hadden and Mrs. Murray, and English Honor Society provided the prize money. Mrs. Hadden shared, “POL allows students to express themselves through the spoken word and to appreciate listening to others interpret the written word. In addition, it provides a platform for these students to meet with others who share and appreciate their love for the spoken word. UAH provides workshops for students who compete at Region and State to hone their skills.”

The winners were as follows:

Recitation Winner: Maggie Brown

Recitation Runner-Up: Jessica Sloan

Original Winner: Maggie Brown

Original Runner-Up: Brooke Heath

They will compete at UAH before they can move onto to the state competition at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery or to the national competition in Washington, DC.
