We’re a Soccer Family: One Player’s Experience

Although it may not be the most popular sport among Bob Jones students, those who are familiar with soccer know it can be just as challenging as the more well-known ones.

The girl’s soccer program began their journey this school year way back into early September. With new players and new coaches, the struggle to rebuild relationships and the program itself was one the new head coach took on. The past few months have been a steep mountain to climb, but now April has come and the outline of the program has begun to take shape. We are a family, no question about it.

Though we may be divided by teams and coaches, we all learn to embrace each other when the weight of training becomes too heavy to hold up. Our new coach inspires all of us; he has a vision for every player on the field and one for the program he’s slowly rebuilding. The process has been a long one and now we’re nearing the end of our first season with a new head coach. Coach Oakley said, “As we progress other phases will be added. We have no time table as to when we’ll be fully what my vision is for this program. We can be anything we want to be, so let’s do it.”

Our team has become stronger and the bonds have become tightly tied. For the Varsity girls, the state championship is within their grasp. What we’ve been working on these past few months has been to fight with the strength of lionesses against our opponents. This dream seems more real than ever now that we’ve become a family. Every time we practice, you feel the warm air blow against your skin and through the strands of your hair. If you look to the blue colored sky, you’ll see that change has happened.

Slowly, but change has planted itself in the soles of our cleats.
