Being a new student at a new school is pretty rough. Getting lost the first day, trying to make way through the crowded halls and especially not knowing who you will sit with at lunch. The Peer Helpers hoped to remedy that awkward feeling. Luau Luncheon took place during lunch on August 30, 2012 for the new students to gather for lunch and make new friends.
They received an invitation announcing that they are welcome to the lunch, provided with free pizza, drinks and give aways. The students even got the chance to play limbo. As students wore name-tags on their shirt, and a new Bob Jones string-drawl bag on their backs offered by the Peer Helpers, everyone exchanged names and conversation to each other.
Many really enjoyed the time being there and liked the idea of the Luau. Sophomore Matt Kuenzli said, “It’s really fun that we get to get out of class and get to know new people.” He also mentioned what he thinks about Bob Jones overall. “The size of the school is a big difference compared to my old school, but I really like it here.”
Even Alyssa Gaddis, junior, said, “The Luau really brings people together and it’s the best way to just make new friends.” In addition, Alyssa brought up about the principal, Mr. Parker: “I love Bob Jones, and I love Mr. Parker! He is the bomb!”
But Mr. Parker is not only the “bomb.” The other school staffs made the lunch great. Counselor Ms. Pam Hendrix happily greeted the new students and made sure everyone had an awesome time. “This whole arrangement is to help the students not feel alone in a big new school and to have them get comfortable with the school.”
By the end of the assembly, students were filled with pizza, laughter and had at least one new friend to say ‘Hey’ to in the hallways.
