Tempted to Litter? Think Again.

Andi is littering. Now some someone might trip on the paper.

Littering is against the law, but most have been tempted to litter at some point.  Some people don’t hesitate to throw a McDonalds cup out of the window, while others may toss the occasional banana peel or apple core.  Any type of litter can have an adverse effect.

When people litter, it can directly or indirectly kill animals. Kevin Colligan said, “Throwing apple cores out the window. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but then rats and mice eat it. Then hawks see them and they go down to eat the rats and mice.   The hawks are slow, and the hawks get hit by a car.”

Mr. Johnston, the A.P. Environmental Science teacher,  confirmed this.  “When banana peels and apple cores go out the window, we think it will decompose, and it will, but here’s the problem… it kills a lot of wildlife.”

When you litter, metal cans, plastic, and glass do not decompose.

Trevor Baker said, “I think it is annoying, but I do it sometimes myself; honestly, I don’t really care about littering, but also I don’t litter things that can’t decompose.”
