Luncheon for the Newbies

Imagine walking down the hallway in your school, seeing people all around you, laughing and talking loudly. Some of them accidently brush against you and some turn to look at you. But instead of actually looking at you, they look through you, as if you were invisible.

This is what it feels like to be a new student. Sometimes, it’s scary. Getting used to a new school is not easy, especially when you do not know anybody. This is why Susan, Claire, Adam, and many more of the Peer Helpers thought of having the Luau Luncheon for the new students of this school.

The luncheon took place on August 15, 2014. Many of the new students gathered together and ate pizza, drank soda, and chatted with one another. According to the Peer Helpers, this luncheon is very important to have for the new students because it helps them to feel comfortable, meet new people, and allows them to find their niche in school. “At first, I was really scared because I didn’t know anybody, but then I went to the luncheon and met so many nice people and now I feel like I fit in” a freshman, Malika Harry, responded.

Mr. Fowler, one of the counselors of this school, says that there are about 100-150 new students each year enrolling into Bob Jones. “I can’t imagine what we would do without our S2S (Student 2 Student) – Peer Helpers.  They have done a fantastic job of welcoming our new students.  Mrs. Drummond and Mr. Hoyle certainly go the extra mile in leading this group,” Mrs. Piro excitingly stated.

Without our Peer Helpers, new students would not feel as welcome as they do right now. At the end of the luncheon, the new students have bonded and made memories with their new friends.
