Peer Helpers: Donut Text and Drive

Damien Riggins, Writer

The Peer Helpers warned people not to text and drive recently. On December 8th, the Peer Helpers at Bob Jones gave the first 50 students that made the pledge free donuts! Until December 12th, the Peer Helpers will be taking pledges in the lunchroom. Bridget Drummond is the primary teacher in this event. Statistics were gathered on the subject, and these were the results:

  1. People who text and drive multiply their chances of crashing by 23%.
  2. 13% of all crashes involving teenagers include texting and driving
  3. 77% of teenagers are fine with texting and driving.
  4. When teenagers text and drive 10% of the time they are out of their lane.
  5. 5% of teens have watched their parents text/drive.

Many car accidents are caused by adults and/or teenagers texting and driving.

The Donut Text was made to help prevent that and keep people safe on the road.  A Peer Helper said that the purpose for this is “to help raise awareness of texting and driving to our community and how to prevent it.”
