It’s that time of year again… Registration. Many people dread hearing the word as it marks the beginning of forms and packets and decisions.

Despite its stressful demeanor, there are ways to make registration easier. Here are some tips to help get what you want and what you need for next year:

  1. Talk to people

Whether it be your friends, a teacher, or a counselor, talking to someone can be extremely helpful when deciding classes.

Mrs. Davis suggested, “Ask about the amount of homework, how difficult the class is, and some of the main things that you will be learning. It can help you decide if you really want to take the class. Challenge yourself, and don’t be afraid to try new things, but make sure not to overload your schedule.”

  1. Think About Your Future

“Choose classes that will help you in the future,” Mary-Kate Rynders said. “The decisions that you make now will affect you later.”

Don’t mindlessly put down classes, even on the alternatives. Choose what classes correspond with what you want to achieve in the future. If you don’t know, then choose classes that interest and challenge you.

  1. Check Requirements

You don’t want to sign up for a class and then not be able to take it. Some classes require a teacher’s signature or a previous class.

Also, you are required to have certain credits and classes to graduate. Be sure to check class and diploma requirements to make sure you have what you need.

  1. Don’t Overload Yourself

It is always great to be challenged and take higher level classes, but don’t take a class if you don’t think you are ready for it. Ask about the requirements and check what else you have on your schedule(in and out of school) to make sure you haven’t put more than you can handle.

When it comes to AP classes, Ryan Witek said, “If you completely immerse yourself in AP classes you can really hurt yourself in the long run, especially if you are not able to handle all of the work.”

Of course, it is always difficult to decide which classes to take, but you don’t have to be alone in the process. There are two College and Career counselors, Ms. Kathryn Champion and Mrs. Sheila Roberts, and your regular counselor.

Remember the forms are due April 1st!
