The Bob Jones Peer Helpers organized a Substance-Free Week of dress-up days, which coincided with the Red Ribbon Week typically observed from October 23rd to October 31st.
The dress-up days correlated with various messages, discouraging making poor decisions about drug and alcohol use while encouraging healthy choices. “Spirit days are what get people excited about campaigns. Because substance abuse is such a powerful topic, we wanted to reach each person,” said Aleah Street. Student participation was great, especially on Adam Sandler Day and Halloween Costume Day. Erabella McCormick hoped that students would take photos and “repost on Instagram and talk to their friends about the week.”
They created a video to accompany Mr. Woodfin’s advisory video. The narrative provided an intro to Mr. Woodfin’s advice. Tyler Parker said that they made the video “to raise awareness and outreach regarding substance abuse in the teen demographic and how to overcome these challenges.”
Peer Helpers also made daily announcements to inform students about the prevalence and dangers of drug use. Brooklyn Williams said, “We tried to communicate and connect with the student body regarding the impacts of substance use and abuse.”
Peer Helpers, advised by Mrs. Edger, carried out a successful campaign, balancing fun dress-up days with a serious topic.
