The Flying Monkey, also known as Lowe Mill, hosts an artist market every Saturday from 12pm to 4pm. Local artists gather together and set up booths and some have studios in which you can admire and buy their work at an affordable price. Greg Long and his wife, Meredith, have set up at the artist market since July 2012. Greg’s art is very eclectic and more under the category of “fine arts”, rather than abstract.
Long stated that he also did photojournalism while in school. “I started photojournalism when I was 14 years old,” said Long, “and by the time I was a senior in high school I was the editor for the newspaper and the yearbook.” Greg Long said that he prefers natural light for his pictures, not artificial light. Denise Hitzfield, another local artist, shared her unique style of art. She got started in sewing when she was really young: “Well, I’ve always sewn since I was really really young. And I started hand-dyeing the fabrics around eight years ago. I started with clothes, mostly clothes. And then when I started hand-dyeing the fabrics, that’s when I got introduced to the art quilts. Then I started doing the art quilts and always made bags and it morphed.”
Denise also has a sewn piece of art called ‘One Last Tear’. The piece of artwork has a pink and orange ombre background with ripped up, jagged pieces sewn on top. “The black was actually a whole heart, but because I had a broken heart…I ripped it and sewn it into different places,” Hitzfield remarked. All the artists contact numbers and email addresses are all posted on the Flying Monkey/ Lowe Mill website.
