End of Watch, directed by Michael Ayer, and set in Los Angeles, California, follows two cops working to keep the streets safe. Brian Taylor and Mike Zavala, played by Jake Gyllenhall and Michael Peña, are the two protagonists, and they are not only cops, but also friends. While making a traffic stop, they stumble upon money, weapons, and drugs from a cartel that is infamous in their area, and they fight to survive this cartel hunting them down.
The film is unique in its use of the camera; sometimes the view is through a gang member’s cell phone, and sometimes through the camera in the front of the cop car. Also, Officer Taylor carries around a camera for a class project, and sometimes the camera is seen through that. This view gives the viewer an experience similar to playing a first person shooter video game, which is refreshing to those who are avid gamers.
Despite the amazing cinematography, the story line is rather generic, of cops making a gang bust, and being hunted. This plot line is seen it’s lots of movies and video games. This movie is not recommended for small children, as there is lots of cursing, lots of violence, some drug usage, and some sexual content. In spite of a tired plot, the unique camera work makes the movie enjoyable.
