Lady Gaga opened the show with an amazing performance of her new single “Applause.” She made five costume changes during her performance and ended with a seashell bikini that had everybody talking. Miley Cyrus was also one of the most talked about artists of the night after she performed her wild and trippy song with Robin Thicke. After their performance, social media exploded with videos and comments about their inappropriate behavior onstage. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis performed their single “Same Love” with Mary Lambert and won three awards: Best Hip-hop Video, Best Video with a Social Message, and Best Cinematography.
Other performers included Kanye West, Drake, Bruno Mars, Austin Mahone, and Ariana Grande. One Direction won the Moonman for Best Song of the Summer with their song “Best Song Ever.” Best Male Video went to Bruno Mars for “Locked out of Heaven.” Best Pop Video went to Selena Gomez for “Come and Get It.” Best Female Video went to Taylor Swift for her song “I Knew You Were Trouble.” Taylor thanked Harry Styles, from One Direction, for inspiring the song.
But the star of the night was Justin Timberlake. Timberlake won four Moonmen, including two of the biggest awards: Video of the Year and the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Justin performed at the VMAs for the first time in over six years. He sang and danced to both his past and current singles. Halfway through his performance, *N Sync appeared on stage with Justin and took over the VMAs. It was the group’s first performance together in over ten years.
The show ended with a performance from Katy Perry, dressed as a boxer, under the Brooklyn Bridge as she sang her single “Roar.”
