The World’s End features middle-aged drunken men reminiscing their high school years. The nostalgic men go back to their hometown to find themselves fighting alien robots. The movie stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Eddie Marson, Martin Freeman, and Paddy Considine. With Simon Pegg being known for stellar acting in comedic movies, this was expected to be very funny. Most people who saw the film were shocked at how inaccurate their expectations were.
In the movie, five friends who have just finished high school challenge themselves to “The Golden Mile.” The challenge requires that they go to twelve different pubs and drink a pint of beer at each. To their disappointment, the friends did not finish this challenge. After the characters have been separated for several years, Gary King, the leader of the five friends, calls his crew together for one last attempt at completing “The Golden Mile.” When asked, Madelyn Wong comments on the unique humor aspects of the movie. “The comedy is a mixture of British humor and stupid funny. Watching five men bar hop like college kids was an oddly entertaining experience.”
The characters have personalities that run the gamut. One is an alcoholic, one is a serious real estate agent, one is a new divorcee, one is a nerd, and one is an unhappy car dealer. Jade Chambers, who loves comedy movies, said, “When the movie started, I felt like I already knew what was going to happen and I wanted to leave. However, I stayed, and I was pleasantly surprised by the action that took place. As the movie progressed, I became more and more interested.” However, Jade is not in good company. Many people, including numerous reviewers, rated the movie poorly, complaining about its repetitiveness.
It may not be the best movie, but do not peg it as unwatchable before watching it yourself.
