Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live and fight in outer space? In Dust 514, a first person shooter game for the PlayStation 3 (PS3), outer space is commonplace. The game is a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) that gives the user a lot of freedom.
Players deploy and command infantry, like tanks and dropships, which are vehicles that maneuver via flight. As players progress through battles, they gain “skill points” that allow them to unlock new skills. The game is all about progression.
The developers of Dust 514 regularly update the game. Matthew Adamczyk, a student at Bob Jones, plays Dust 514 nearly incessantly. He said that Dust 514 is “a huge universe completely run by the players [that is] meaningfully influenced by player’s actions. The game takes commitment, and if you are willing to commit, great and fun times can and will be had in abundance.” Turner Lewis, another avid player of the game, said, “I like that the makers of the game update Dust 514 monthly, and I think some players will stay because of that.”
The player calls the shots in Dust 514. The player gets to choose his skills. He gets to choose what type of player he will be. For example, the player may choose to become proficient in skills like speed and handling of light weaponry. By selecting this set of skills, this player would likely be a scout.
Vehicle selection also plays a prominent role in Dust 514. Different players will choose different vehicles, according to their preferences. This is just one more way in which the player can exercise liberty.
Matthew Adamczyk said, “Dust 514 has a long way to go but has so much potential compared to other generic first person shooter games.”
Dust 514 is a beautifully crafted game. The developers did a great job of creating a game with great replay value. The game effectively and charmingly creates difficulty without being overwhelming. If you like games that involve progress, Dust 514 is the perfect game for you.
