Taking a Look at “Digimon Adventure tri.”
May 14, 2015
If you went through elementary between 2005 and 2007, then most likely you were one of the many American children that sat in front of your TV before bed and watched “Digimon: Digital Monsters” on JETIX. And I just happened to be one of those kids, and I was obsessed. It was actually one of the first anime I ever watched and I consider it the seed of me becoming an anime fan once I reached high school. For over 15 years, the franchise has not only survived but also thrived. And this year, it’s back again.
In 2015 in November, Toei Animation will be releasing “Digimon Adventure tri”, the seventh series in the franchise. It is designed to serve as a direct sequel to the very first series, “Digimon Adventure”, and to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the franchise.
Even though it won’t be released for another six months or so, they have still give a very brief idea of the story. It’s nothing special; it’s basically the original eight returning to the Digital World to purge it of evil once more and takes place six years after the end of “Adventure”. Not much to say.
I will, however, talk a little about the animation, as it was what gained my attention the most. While it’s still going to be animated by the same company, the series seems to have taken on a totally new style completely different to the previous series’. I can only describe it as looking very similar to series like “Penguindrum” or “Tsuritama”.
The other huge difference is that rather than a TV show, this will be released as a series of six theatrical films. It will have a small callback to the original, as the opening will be a cover of the first series’ opening, which is entitled “Butter-fly.”
It’ll be worth checking out, though it’s hard to compete with the nostalgia of childhood.
