Star Wars: The Force Awakens Breaks Box Office Records

When die-hard Star Wars fans sat in movie theaters across the country wearing Jedi and stormtrooper costumes on Thursday evening, December 17, they knew they were about to see the movie of a lifetime. They may not, however, have known that they were about to be part of movie and box office history across the world.

Star Wars: the Force Awakens officially hit its opening day on Friday, December 18 and the movie was an instant hit across the nation bringing in $247 million during its opening weekend. To add some comparison, the previous record-holder for opening weekend was Jurassic World, which brought in $208 million.

Since then, the new Star Wars has been the fastest movie to make $100 million (24 hours), $200 million (three days), $300 million (five days), $400 million (eight days), $500 million (10 days), $600 million (12 days), and $700 million (16 days). The most impressive record broken by this new movie was made only 20 days after hit theaters, as Star Wars: The Force Awakens became the number one grossing movie in North America of all time.

A strange phenomenon in this large event is that many people, not just fans, went to see the movie more than once in theaters. A current senior and avid Star Wars fangirl, Katherine Reardon, provided her thoughts on the subject. “I’ve seen the movie three times so far and I will probably see it again before it leaves theaters. The costumes were amazing, the new actors were amazing, the way the story was written is just amazing. Anyone who hasn’t seen this movie yet needs to as soon as possible.”

Now that Star Wars has dominated and successfully taken over North America, the next record the movie looks to break is the worldwide highest grossing of all time, currently being held by James Cameron’s Avatar with over $2.7 billion. Some people believe that the new movie was good, but not good enough to pass the long-running James Cameron behemoth. Other people claim that this new movie will smash every record in place and then will be the goal to beat for decades. As of January 13, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has racked up $1.87 billion as their total worldwide gross. Whether or not the new movie breaks the top box office record, Disney can safely say that they knocked it out of the ballpark.
