Adventure Time’s Time is Out
October 8, 2016
The beloved children’s cartoon Adventure Time will end its reign on Cartoon Network in 2018. Adventure Time followed the trials and tribulations of Jake the Dog and Finn the Human in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, filled with iconic characters such as Princess Bubblegum, Lumpy Space Princess, and The Ice King.
Although targeted for children, Adventure Time is a television show popular amongst all ages.
Tahseen Robbani, a Bob Jones senior, said “ I started watching Adventure Time when it first came out when I was 10 or 11 and back then I didn’t realize the meaning of the show would be so deep and I continued to watch the show to this day.”
Rebecca Sugar, an original contributor to Adventure Time, has been able to launch her own show after the success of Adventure Time, Steven Universe. Sugar is the first woman to have created a show for Cartoon Network.
Shows such as Adventure Time and Steven Universe have been praised for their representation of women and LGBTQ+ relationships.
“Adventure Time changed the definition of what a kids’ TV series could be, and it’s had a resounding impact upon popular culture around the world,” Rob Sorcher, the chief content officer of Cartoon Network stated. “Cartoon Network Studios is proud to have brought together this group of brilliant artists and animators who helped make Adventure Time one of the most critically acclaimed TV series of a generation.”
Adventure Time has been awarded six Emmys and two BAFTAs since it aired. Stars such as Neil Patrick Harris, Rainn Wilson, and George Takei have even guest starred on the show. Other well known actors such as Tom Kenny, the voice of Spongebob Squarepants, and John DiMaggio, the voice of Bender on Futurama, voiced Jake the Dog and The Ice King respectively.
Pendelton Ward, the show’s creator and voice of Lumpy Space Princess, remarked “We tried to put into every episode something genuine and telling from our lives and make a show that was personal to us and that had jokes too! I’m really happy that it connected with an audience for so long. It’s a special thing, I think.”
Another popular Cartoon Network show, The Regular Show, created by life long friend of Ward, JG Quintel, is also on its last season.
“I’d hate to see it [Adventure Time] go, but it had a good run,” Zach Johnson, Bob Jones sophomore said.
Adventure Time will end with 142 half-hours of content created.
