Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children Movie Review
October 25, 2016
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, directed by Tim Burton who also directed classic movies such as Nightmare Before Christmas and The Corpse Bride, is a cinematic take on the 2011 novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
In this film starring Eva Green as Miss Peregrine and Asa Butterfield as Jake, retells the story of young Jake when he embarks on an adventure to unravel the mystery left by his grandfather, where he encounters Emma Bloom, who introduces him to Miss peregrine, an event which unlocks a vault of secrets, powers, and dangerous enemies. Throughout the movie, Jake must come to the realization that he is peculiar, and that his peculiarity could be the only thing that saves his new friends.
Once this movie premiered in theaters, it was quickly met with differing reviews. When interviewing Michelle Davis, a freshman, she stated that while the movie was at times “hard to follow,” she would still recommend the movie to other students. These views however, seem to somewhat contradict those of IMDb who rated the movie 7.1/10, Rotten Tomatoes who rated it at 64%, and Common Sense Media who rated it at 3 out of 5. Three different reviews all from Metacritic seem to highlight the somewhat mixed reviews felt by those who watched the movie, as critic Richard Roeper stated that he felt the movie was “a messy, confusing, uninvolving mishmash of old-school practical effects and CGI battles,” while critic Chris Hewitt stated that they felt that even though the movie was “neither as dark, funny nor peculiar as you’d expect from Tim Burton, there is still much here to admire,” and yet another critic, Justin Chang stated that “The sense of film craft here is so delicate and assured that, even at its most razzle dazzle-prone moments, the movie never seems to be straining for effect.”
While this movie may not have been reviewed highly by some critics, it still received high praise from a number of critics and moviegoers. This is a movie that is mysterious, creepy, and full of action and adventure, so if you’re looking for a movie to go watch with your friends on a Saturday night, this film is certainly one to consider.
