The Greatest Showman is the Greatest

“Celebrates the birth of show business, and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.” -20th Century Fox
“Paints a portrait of the metaphorical tightrope P.T. Barnum walked, and we’re drawn into his mesmerizing world. -Kristin Smith
“Exuberant performances propel this musical biopic, which isn’t perfect but does occasionally delight thanks to its stellar cast, led by the inimitable Jackman.” –Sandie Angulo Chen
What movie could this possibly have these amazing reviews and keep you on the edge of your seat with plot, music, and characters? It’s quite simple, “The Greatest Showman.”
“The Greatest Showman” tells the story of P.T Barnum and his creation of not just the circus but entertainment as we know it today. This movie received multiple nominations for the Golden Globe award, including the Best Motion Picture, Best Musical or Comedy, and Best Actor. It ended up winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song with “This is Me.”
I never bothered to see this movie until I listened to the soundtrack. Each song is unique in itself (not including the reprised version of songs) with fun and exciting songs and then switching to more serious and romantic songs. The songs themselves had me pumped to see this movie, and let me say, it did not disappoint. It still had people in the theaters even though it had been out for a while, which to me was a great sign. I walked into this theater having a bad day, and I walked out feeling inspired and ready to take on the world. Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, and Zendaya was a mixture that I thought could not possibly work, but it worked in every way imaginable.
If you have not seen this movie, I highly recommend watching it, and if this doesn’t sell you and you need more than just this critic’s review, listen to this local review from sophomore Jonathan Purlee: “ Yes I enjoyed this movie, I’m gonna give The Greatest Showman 9/10, and for me that is extremely rare. I love the music in this movie. The plot was ok, but the acting and music make up for it.”
And if that doesn’t sell you, I don’t know what will.
