If there’s one event in Alabama that takes the spotlight, it’s Hamacon! I’ve been to nearly every convention since 2015, and I always see and meet people from all over Alabama, sometimes from other states as well!

So what is Hamacon?

Hamacon gets its name from “Huntsville and Madison Anime Convention”, where the panels and events circle around eastern animation, art and other forms of pop culture. Not a huge fan of anime? You don’t have to be to enjoy Hamacon! I started attending Hamacon before I took interest in anime, and still had a wonderful experience. As said before, although this convention may be themed around eastern animation, Hamacon still focuses on pop culture or common interests targeted by teenagers, and welcomes everyone!

I often find many people like me who share common interests, which makes Hamacon great for finding friends and minds alike. I’ve met people through the gaming center, art panels, informative panels, karaoke, and many other involved activities provided. Even the staff is hospitable and welcoming! But friends are not the only thing to look forward to meeting- many voice actors and celebrities attend this convention as well. The VIPs don’t just limit themselves to autographing either, I’ve had very fun interactions and in-depth conversations with them before- which makes Hamacon a great opportunity to meet your idol or favorite actor/artist!

Looking to buy unique art, or handcrafted gifts and merchandise? Hamacon has it all; vendors pack the floor with merchandise, art and handmade novelties. You can find exclusive merchandise for great deals within the dealer’s room; I’ve obtained many limited edition novelties that are imported straight from Japan! The dealers room has nearly everything you can think of- from clothes, plushies, props, costumes and cosplay, foreign snacks, video games, and so much more! If you’re looking for art, you can’t miss the artists’ alley. Many previous attendees rave about how unique and outstanding it is- it never fails to impress me each year to see what people create, and even gives me some inspiration for my own art. There you’ll find original prints, drawings, paintings and crafts!

Hamacon also holds a very prodigious cosplay contest. I’m always amazed to see how much time and effort goes into one’s costume. Many students and previous attendees I interviewed say that cosplay is one of the most entertaining parts of the convention. If there is one thing Hamacon is known for, it’s their expressive cosplayers!

Hamacon is a convention like no other; there’s always something to participate in. If you’ve ever experienced boredom or excessive downtime at a convention, you’ll soon discover Hamacon is quite the opposite. Between gaming events, viewing anime, dancing, art studies, karaoke, meeting your idol, and the Hamcon Rave, there’s always something to do at Hamacon!
