What if you had Hot Cheetos, sweet peppers, pasta, three dill pickles, and whatever is left in your refrigerator for dinner? Does this pique your interest or raise a question as to why you would have this for dinner? Well, have you heard of the ensemble that is Girl Dinner? For those who haven’t, Urban Dictionary defines Girl Dinner as, “A dinner that consists of many different kinds of small appetizers/snacks rather than just one entree.” It is a viral phenomenon, mainly on TikTok, with people eating whatever they want/can find for dinner or really any meal of the day. Eating things like a side of beans, three slices of ham, grapes, and cheese and calling it your meal. Eating until full on whatever it is you’re craving. Although the name implies it’s just for girls, Girl Dinner is for everyone.
Girl Dinner has its pros such as being cost-effective, allowing you to eat whatever food may be about to expire, letting people listen to what their body is craving, and encouraging intuitive eating. Freshman Cypress Bryce stated, “Girl dinner is awesome! It’s whatever you’re craving and however much you want of it, and you don’t want to stress about calories and counting everything.” That is a great way of looking at it. It also seems that this was along the lines of the original intention behind Girl Dinner. But with all of these seemingly great positives on the other end of the spectrum, there is the concern that Girl Dinner is an excuse for eating disorders. Eating very little portions and telling people it’s ok because it’s “Girl Dinner.” It might promote the normalization of eating and glorifying smaller portions. It also might be a catalyst for other women to fall into a cycle of eating disorders. Junior Dani Kessler gave voice to the controversies: “In some ways, girl dinner is misinterpreted as girls eating very little or eating what others would call ‘snacks’ for dinner.” Nutritionists are also concerned because Girl Dinners may not meet all the nutritional requirements that one needs in a meal. With that being said, I say that Girl Dinner is a mostly positive new eating trend because it does not emphasize restrictions on eating. Personally, my favorite Girl Dinner is Velveeta Mac and Cheese and blueberries. Freshman Chloe McCloud’s favorite Girl Dinner is “about four small travel bags of Cheez-Its and some Oreos with some sweet tea.”Another example is senior Sam Robbins’ favorite Girl Dinner: “grapes, cheese, sweet pickles, crackers, and hamburger patty.” After all, if people like Girl Dinner and it’s not harming them, I say let them feast without judgment. Go out and have your Girl Dinner or whatever you want to call it. |
