Deadpool & Wolverine is Marvel’s latest movie, coming out this past summer, and despite being Rated R, still seems to be raking in money from teenage audiences. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the film, unsurprisingly, has been a huge success. The $200 million budget movie has already netted over $600 million in North America and nearly $1.3 billion worldwide. However, just like with any other movie, people are wondering if it’s even good.
Like every movie, good or bad, Deadpool & Wolverine has its flaws, its main one being that its plot is underwhelming. David Griffiths, a critic on Rotten Tomatoes from Subculture Entertainment, says, “the plot itself is kind of bland and it [the movie] never really overcomes it.” Ross Anthony of Hollywood Report Card was a bit more optimistic whilst giving his critiques in his review he posted on Rotten Tomatoes, saying, “Who needs a reasonable plot when the ride is so fun?” Both Griffiths and Anthony point out the film’s sub-par plot, but Anthony simultaneously shows his appreciation for the fun of the movie.
On the contrary, users on IMDb seemed to have loved every bit of Deadpool & Wolverine.
“It’s a very good action-packed fun film,” said user omar-d-sheikh. MiroslavKyuranov especially appreciated the comedy, writing, “I laughed so hard, even my stomach was feeling it.” Finally, user dam-24421, despite also being disappointed with the plot, concluded his review saying, “I say go for it, and at least you end up laughing.”
In a survey of Bob Jones students, ratings of the movie ranged from 5-10 out of 10, with 45.5% of the answers being a 9/10. 90.9% of respondents also stated that they’d recommend the movie to a friend. A senior at Bob Jones, Amelia Gatzke, rated the movie a 7 out of 10 and said, “Their [Deadpool and Wolverine’s] chemistry was, by far, the best part of the movie.”
The movie’s success makes it hard to estimate when it will leave theaters, but judging by its release date of July 26, it’s safe to say that it won’t remain in cinemas much longer, possibly leaving before September ends. In terms of streaming, Forbes says that PVOD services (which follow a pay-per-view model (for example renting a movie for 48 hours)) should be available as soon as mid-September, around September 17 or September 20. The film’s release date for SVOD services (like Disney Plus or Netflix) is estimated to be around October or November, but no earlier than October 25. The film’s first SVOD release is set to be on Disney Plus because Disney wants all of their Marvel titles to be available on the same streaming service.
So, should Deadpool & Wolverine be on everyone’s list of ‘must-watch’ movies? Everyone’s opinion is different, as shown through reviews, but it can be concluded that a lot of people enjoyed the film. To those who want to watch the movie in theaters, hurry! It’ll only stay for a couple more weeks, and it might take a while to reach streaming services.
