Halloween: a time where people will either become a character of the past or future. People relish being something that they have never been before, and they love to see something they wouldn’t normally get to see on a daily basis.
On Halloween, Monaco participated in Halloween by having a special showing of The Shining, a classic horror movie.
On May 23, 1980, director Stanley Kurbick released a psychological horror based off a book by Stephen King. It follows a family as it moves into a hotel. Unbeknownst to the family the hotel has a questionable past that starts interfering with the family’s psychological state. This “haunted hotel” theme is common in horror movies.
Because this is an older movie, it didn’t really please the younger crowd. Teenagers nowadays are used to blood and gore, a hard-to-follow story line with a cool plot, or something outstandingly surprising. The Shining lacked these qualities because it was such a cliché horror movie that anybody could guess every next development in the film.
Trevor Thomas, a senior at Bob Jones, thought, “it was terrible” and “the selection could have been better.”
But, if we are open to the past and accept it for its lack of technology that we are blessed with today, people could actually enjoy it.
Kaylie Miller, also a senior at Bob Jones who happens to be “addicted to older movies,” insightfully said, “I think it’s a very thoughtful, well-made film that relies on suspense rather than horror.”
Monaco Pictures, located in Bridge Street, doesn’t just save this special airing of older movies for Halloween. They participate in a promotion of Throwback Thursday every week, showing older movies in an attempt to change things up and have a unique twist to their movie selection.
A ticket to their Throwback Thursday selection is offered for $6 for general admission and $8 for their Prive experience. They are always shown at 7:00 p.m. every Thursday. Though the movies aren’t advertised, you can find their predetermined list on their website.
This week’s movie is Coming to America, will you be checking it out?
