Christmas is sneaking up on us, and you can find hints of the Christmas spirit already being sprinkled across town. Restaurants are playing Christmas music, stores are promoting their Christmas décor, and summer clothes are going on clearance as scarves and bubble coats fill the aisles. And, of course, the Botanical Garden has already begun its annual jump-start on Christmas lights. Using thousands of twinkling bulbs, Huntsville’s very own public garden has managed to make this year’s show even bigger than the last.
The Galaxy of Lights is a show at the Botanical Garden that features amazing light displays, each consisting of hundreds of luminaries. You will see Santa flying over his village, nursery rhyme characters playing in their storybook scenes, and the well-known Twinkling Icicle Forest.
The perfect holiday outing, the Galaxy of Lights ensures fun for all ages. Sharon West, a member of the Botanical Gardens and proud mother of three boys, says that she and her family come to see the lights every year. “It’s a tradition our family always looks forward to. Every year there is something new to see, and they keep finding ways to make it that much better,” she said.
Jordon West, oldest son of Sharon, expresses that the showing really is suitable for people of all ages. “I’ve been coming since I was a little kid, and now, being a senior in college, [I enjoy it just as much],” he said.
The Galaxy of Lights is also perfect for the little tykes in your family. Kids can sit with Santa in his workshop, and parents can capture pictures of them sharing their Christmas wish lists with him. I spoke with Susan Smith, a young mother of her two-year-old daughter. “I knew she would love it, but I didn’t expect her to this much! When she saw Santa,” Susan exclaimed, “she just ran up to him and gave him a huge hug. It was such a precious sight to see.”
Being a high school student in Madison, I am confident when I say that entertainment tends to fall short around here most of the time. The Galaxy of Lights is the perfect weekend activity for you and your Christmas-loving friends. “The lights are amazing! It must have taken them all year just to prepare!” speculates Diaesha Summerhill, a senior at Bob Jones.
