Moe’s Original Barbecue’s first started in 2001 between Ben Gilbert, Mike Fernandez, and Jeff Kennedy. The three met at the University of Alabama and became friends. They bonded over their love of the South, including their love for barbecue.
Moe’s Original Barbecue is located at 445 Providence Main Street. There is also a location on Cecil Ashburn Drive. They serve pork, chicken, turkey, wings and ribs. They serve both platters and sandwiches.
Inside, the restaurant looks like the inside of a cabin. It is lined with dark wood paneling, and it is dimly lit. Also, the tables are strewn with picnic blanket designs which creates a quaint environment, and it is quite pleasant to be in.
It is a sit down style restaurant, but you order at the front, then sit down. The food was ready very quickly.
One thing I especially like about the restaurant is that there is a pot holding the barbecue sauce containers to keep them warm. One can go to the pot and pour themselves warm barbecue sauce.
The food was rather subpar. I ordered the Pulled Pork Platter, which came with pork, cornbread, macaroni and cheese, and potato salad. There was not very much pork, and it was very bland. Even after dousing it with extra barbecue sauce, it still lacked flavor. The macaroni and cheese was not very cheesy. It tasted just like cooked pasta without any flavoring. I had to douse that in barbecue sauce as well to give it some flavor. The potato salad was the same. Bland. The corn bread was the best part of the whole meal, it was soft, flaky, and delicious. No barbecue sauce was needed on it.
At a restaurant that specializes in barbecue, the platters are supposed to shine through, especially the traditional pulled pork platter. However, this was not the case.
The staff, however, were warm and friendly. And regardless of the taste, I still enjoyed my eating experience.
