In the horrific comedy Rubber, a tire, named Robert, comes to terms with his destructive side after discovering he has telepathic capabilities.
Sounds crazy, right? Just in that first sentence, I probably said at least five things that you are already wondering wildly about. This is, in fact, a movie whose main character is a rubber car tire.
In the film, a group of people pays money to watch Robert from a distance as he wakes up in the middle of the desert. Almost like a newborn, he starts off unable to complete a task with such simplicity as rolling, a basic skill for any tire. He fumbles the first couple of times, but Robert perseveres and is soon up and moving. As he is rolling along, he runs into abstract objects that appear as obstacles in his journey. Robert, then, learns through his frustration that he possesses a power that allows him to overcome them.
This movie is down right insane. From the lingering crowd of observers, to the apparent threat felt by a crushed soda can, this movie makes just about as much sense as a fire breathing butterfly who’s main purpose in life is to dance across the hearts of singing ponies: it doesn’t.
However, though completely asinine by means of structure or realism, this movie is incredibly entertaining. After all, that is what our society is drawn to these days. We love the movies that allow us to leave our intelligent apprehension behind and enjoy the stupidity that some people are creative enough to put out there. So, the next chance you get to look this movie up and watch it for yourself, well, I just know that you will.
