This year is the 50th anniversary of Cummings Research Park. It was founded in 1962 for high tech industries. With the exception of Redstone Arsenal, Cummings Research Park has changed the face of Huntsville, which was once known as a mill town.
Today, Research Park contains over 300 businesses and employs around 30,000 people, according to WAFF. It is the second largest research and technology park in the United States, and it is the fourth largest research and technology park in the world, according to WHNT.
There are several events taking place this week to mark the milestone, such as a proclamation commemorating the anniversary at Adtran and a luncheon on the campus of Hudson Alpha.
Cummings Research Park not only affects Madison as a whole, but it also affects Bob Jones High School. Many students looking for internships find them at Research Park because there are over 300 businesses. One of those businesses is bound to need an intern. “The businesses commonly offering internships for Bob Jones students are Adtran, Raytheon, and AOS,” said Mrs. Rountree, a computer programming teacher at Bob Jones.
