Good times never seemed so good.
On October 30th, after a crippling six-game campaign stocked with turmoil, triumph, and tunes, the Boston Red Sox won the 2013 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. With a few ambitious plays and dozens of close calls, the Sox came out on top in a 4-2 battle, securing the title for their city. Giants like Koji Uehara, David Ortiz, and John Lackey steered the beards to victory, and history wrote itself into the bats and gloves of the players. This was truly a series to remember.
Accompanied by controversial calls and impossible feats, the World Series was full of drama. Game 3 ended in an obstruction call – Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks tripped a baserunner. By rule, such an obstruction results in an automatic run. The umpires correctly awarded the Cardinals the run and the win. In Game 4, St. Louis sent a pinch runner, Kolten Wong, out to first base; he took a large lead off the base, and the pitcher, Uehara, managed to pick him off, ending the game. This was the first time a World Series game ended in such a peculiar manner. Play after play, hit after hit, pitch after pitch, the Red Sox and the Cardinals crusaded for the title in an altercation worthy of the history books. And for the first time since 1918, the Red Sox came out on top at Fenway Park.
“This year’s series was not disappointing at all,” says a longtime Red Sox fan. “Exciting pitching against an incredible defense made this series one of my favorites.”
It’s humorous to note that the ticket prices for Game 6 were record-smashing. According to TiqIQ, the average resale price for a ticket was $2,056, an 11.48% increase from the previous day. ESPN states that the last time the Sox won a World Series at Fenway, tickets were $1.65 (this was 1918, of course). Times have certainly changed.
It was a leviathan battle, an epic conquest, and a sweet, sweet victory worthy of Caroline’s praise. The Boston Red Sox stole the title from St. Louis and heroes (prematurely bearded) were born.
