The Scholastic Art and Writing contest pits the most creative students in the country against each other. The hard work put into this endeavor can pad a resume as well as lead to scholarship dollars.
Categories for the writing side of Scholastic are poetry, short story, memories, flash fiction, dramatic script, humor journalism, persuasive writing, writing portfolio and science fiction & fantasy.
In art, the variety of categories range from physical perspectives like architecture, ceramics & glass, fashion, jewelry, printmaking and sculptures to the 2D world of photography, film & animation, digital art, comic art, design, mixed media, drawing, and art portfolio.
The road to creating pieces for this competition began last semester for our winners this year – finding inspiration. “I hardly ever write about children and the idea of seeing the world through a child’s eyes is wondrous and whimsical to me,” Emily Bohatch said. It takes a lot of time to conjure up work for such an intimidating competition. “I thought the most I would receive was an honorable mention,” Sarah Buckelew said.
Ms. Lakso teaches the advanced art classes and helps artists cultivate their art portolios. Mrs. Norton lays the groundwork and provides students with fundamental skills that the judges want to see.
In creative writing and multimedia publications, students develop portfolios that showcase writing and multimedia works from all genres. “For Scholastic, students can pull pieces from their portfolios without having to do much extra work,” said Mrs. Panagos. “It’s an optional contest for my students, but the ones who enter it are pretty serious about it.”
In writing, Mary Butgereit submitted her writing portfolio and took home a gold key along. Sarah Bucklew, Sabrina Chen, Kristie Martins, and Alyssa Kennedy won individual gold keys.
In art, Troy Koeler, Harper Pannell, Natalie Petrucka, Lauryn Rody and Leah Parker won gold keys for their pieces. These are the full listings of awards and winners in writing and in art.
Scholastic will publish national results on March 17.
