Fred, the Swedish Singing Sailor

Fred, the Swedish Singing Sailor

It is doubtful that Redstone Arsenal and nearby defense contractors will adopt similar defense methods, but the Swedes have an interesting sense of humor and interesting defense tactics.

Sweden decriminalized homosexuality in 1944. Now that a Russian submarine has been seen in Swedish waters, the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society has come up with a way to deter the anti-gay country. They have made a “Singing Sailor,” which is a neon sign in the shape of a man wearing only a sailor hat and underwear. It thrusts his hips while hearts pulse behind him. In hot pink are the words “Welcome to Sweden. Gay since 1944.” The sign is in English as well as Russian to make sure there is no misunderstanding.

If that wasn’t enough to get under thick Russian skin, the device also sends out a message in Morse code. The message is as follows: “This way if you are gay.” All of the flash isn’t just to tease Russia and its anti-gay policy. The sign is also to advertise the Stockholm Pride Parade, which takes place August 1st. Bob Jones upcoming senior, Rebecca Sloan, said “I think Sweden is stating that it can’t be governed by anyone by doing that.”

Singing Sailor Fred was made to persuade the Swedish government to think of other ways to defend their land instead of weapons. It is even possible to donate to the Sailor. Anna Ek, the president of SPAS proclaims, “If military actions and weapons had functioned as conflict-resolution methods, there would be peace in the world a long time ago.”

To donate to the cause, you can go to their website. The money is to support SPAS for future peacekeeping missions.
