Vote to Keep The Ship Afloat

Trevor Stewart and Stephen Rasberry

We all know that you must register to vote prior to doing so, but many people are unaware of the restrictions, deadlines, and or required documentation that must be met in order to do so.

In order to register, you must fill out an Alabama Voter registration form and have your driver’s license or social security card. All students who are interested in voting must make sure that they turn 18 before March 1st 2016.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re aware of the upcoming presidential election.

Tyler Bullard, a senior who actively follows politics in the U.K. as well as the U.S. and watched both of the Republican debates and plans on watching the Democratic debates as well, will be voting.  He said that he keeps up to make an informed decisions as to who will represent him.

On the other hand, some other students don’t seem to hold the same level of concern. For example, senior Reggie White is leaning more toward not voting. When asked if he feels his vote makes a difference, he said “yes but a small one.” That small difference may not be enough motivation to convince Reggie to go out and vote.

Some other students would leap at the opportunity to vote. Jaquela Brown was a bit disappointed after discovering she is ineligible to vote. She’s upset because originally she was under the impression that she could vote as long as she was 18 in the year 2016. She was unaware of other voting requirements, such as having to register a certain amount of days before the vote (the amount of days varies by state).

Students who plan on voting need to make an informed decision. It’s also important to recognize media bias.  The election will affect the future, and the decision should be in one’s best interest.

As Sandra Brinker once said, “We need to empower our young people to be stronger citizens and to use their vote. If you give up your vote, you give up everything.”
