Walking for Charity

Will Richerson, Writer

St. Patrick’s Day historically has not always been the most family friendly holiday.  It is generally associated with alcohol and more adult oriented things.  However, the 007-Venture Crew of Madison, Alabama is trying to change that with their “Family Parade and Pet Walk”.

Not only is this event fun and family friendly, but it also benefits charity.  Each participating family or person is requested to bring non-perishable canned food to be donated to the St. Vincent DePaul organization or pet food to be donated to MARF (Madison Animal Rescue Foundation).  All monetary donations will go to these organizations as well.  Donations are not required, but they are greatly appreciated.

This event is a sidewalk parade spanning a collective three miles.  The walking route starts in the Discovery middle school parking lot and stretches to Bob Jones High School and back.  Bringing pets is encouraged, as well as is Irish costume and clothing.

The pet walk is organized by Venture Crew 007, Madison’s only Venture crew.  Venture scouting is a section of boy scouting intended for both boys and girls that focuses on expeditions and charity service.  While Venture Scouting crews generally have fewer members than do their Boy Scouting counterparts, that does not stop them from putting together some great charity events.

The St. Patrick’s Day Family Parade and Pet Walk will take place next Sunday, March 13th, and will start at 2:00 pm.  If you or your family plan to go remember that donations are requested and pets and costumes are encouraged.  For anyone interested in joining Venture Crew 007 or any other Venture Crew, information will be provided at the pet walk, or at Venture Crew 007’s website here.
