Celebrate Black History Month!

Aaliyah Coe, Contributer

Carter G. Woodson introduced and encouraged the study of African American history in 1926. It was a weekly celebration and in 1976, President Gerald Ford declared February as “Black History Month.” Black History Month was established to celebrate and bring attention to African American people who shaped, contributed, and influenced American history. Every February, we take time to observe and celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans through literature, media, events, and discussions. By participating, we gain a better understanding of the culture and raise awareness to the African American contributions taking place in today’s society.

The celebration of black history is not limited to the month of February; it is important to heighten the contributions of African Americans not recognized throughout the year. However, February is a short month and is coming to an end. Consider taking time to participate in Black History Month events and activities to educate and to gain a better understanding of the importance of African American contributions and achievements in the past and present.

Bob Jones High School English class is limited to the requirements of learning from African American literature. The advantage of learning and educating oneself of African American history is not limited to the classrooms, i.e., the library, your teachers, and your peers.

Mrs. Husky, media specialist at Bob Jones, works to highlight African American authors by providing a variety of African American literature such as The Eyes of Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, The Color Purple by Alice Walker, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and so much more.

The Young Advocates for Equality (YAFE) at Bob Jones offers a Black History Month trivia Patriot Path. Test your knowledge or learn something new.

As Marian Wright Edelman once said, “Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.” Happy Black History Month!
