It’s National Library Card Sign-up Month! So, what is a library card? It is a membership card for the public library. Library cards are only free if you live in the area the library is in, but if you lose them and need a replacement, then that is going to cost you money. If you don’t live in the area where the library is, then you may have to pay. Library cards typically last three years, but that depends on where you live. In some libraries, you can sign up for a library card either at the library or online. You can use a library card for many things, such as printing stuff at the library, listening to audiobooks, watching DVDs, watching movies, reading books, and more.
National Library Card Sign-up Month has been around since 1987. It began as a response to the Secretary of Education at the time William Bennett. He said, “Let’s have a campaign where every child should obtain a library card and use it.” All over the US, every library is trying to get as many library cards handed out as possible. It’s an act to get children to read books and learn more about reading.
Our nearest library is the Madison Public Library at 142 Plaza Blvd, Madison, AL 35758.
