The results of the 2024 elections came in quickly as voters scrambled their way to the state-sanctioned voting locations. Election Day is on November 5 and is an exciting occasion for many Americans, as they get to use their Constitutional Right to democratically vote for their pick of government officials. As stated by USAToday, the time normally required for counting the votes can fluctuate, with 4 days in 2020, early morning in 2016, and even as long as 35 days for the 2000 election.
The Electoral College is an important part of the election process, with the winner requiring 270 votes to win the election. NPR says that, at 5:34am ET Wednesday, Trump had 277 electoral votes total, with a combined 29 electoral votes coming from Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. With 538 total electoral votes, President-elect Trump won 312 electoral votes with Kamala Harris coming in with 226 electoral votes. Donald Trump won all seven of the battleground swing states. At Bob Jones High School, a student survey revealed insights into youth voting preferences and the influence of parental beliefs on political leanings. In this survey, 74 students voted in a mock election. With 29 votes for Kamala Harris, 25 votes for Donald Trump, 1 vote for Jill Stein, and 19 votes for other parties. Kamala Harris won with 39.2% of the votes. When asked whether their parents’ views affected their own political standpoints, 32 said yes, 23 said no, and 8 had inconclusive answers. One student said, “Yes, my parents’ views have affected my political beliefs. I trust my parents, especially in the area of politics, because they have firsthand experience of the changes made by presidents. (For example, they know inflation and pushed agendas when they see it in stores and entertainment and on the news.) They also have research backing up their claims.” This point of view is widely shared by the survey voters who answered yes, as they say the way they were raised affected what they would want in a political candidate. On the opposite side another student said, “They haven’t really. I’ve formed my views based on how I see the world and how I want the people in it to be seen and recognized. They certainly helped by providing a moral base to start my beliefs off of, but everything I believe in has been more or less built by me.” Specifically in Alabama, voters also weighed in on other candidates. These votes are for 1-7 US House District. Most of the candidates that won were Republicans, with only 2 Democrats. There were a total of 3 uncontested candidates, all of them being Republican. |
