Most students have now participated in Academic Flex; however, some people want to know what exactly it is and what it entails. With the help of Dr. Hanks, this Q&A should help students better understand the purpose of Flex, activities for each grade, social opportunities, how it’s different than Patriot Path, and the future of Patriot Path/Flex.
What is the purpose of Academic Flex?Dr. Hanks stated, “The purpose of academic flex is to provide students with skills needed to grow on state assessments, school grades, assignment/assessment completion, and relationship building.” Essentially, students will work to raise their grades, learn testing skills, and take assessments. What will each grade be doing in Flex?Freshmen will be using the time to take the ELA and Math IReady Diagnostic Tests, and depending on their results, extra lessons or study hall. Sophomores will use it as a study hall and missing assignment makeup. Juniors will mainly be doing ACT prep. Seniors will work to pass the Workkeys. Will students still have social and creative opportunities during Flex?Dr. Hanks said, “There will be opportunities for this once everything gets more established.” Once Flex becomes more stable and permanent, there will likely be more ways to talk and be creative. How does Flex differ from Patriot Path?Although it’s mostly in the name, Dr. Hanks said that Academic Flex is focused on academics. On the other hand, Patriot Path was focused on peer relationships. Students should be automatically signed up for Academic Flex. Patriot Path allowed students to sign up for what interested them. Will Patriot Path return in the future?Although nothing has been decided for certain, Dr. Hanks believed that Patriot Path may be incorporated in the future. This implies that it may not be back entirely, but instead might be combined with Academic Flex. This might include a more diverse range of activities and social opportunities in Flex. In summary, Academic Flex is a learning-focused replacement for Patriot Path that will be utilized to raise student grades and test scores. Any other questions can be directed to a student’s assigned Flex class teacher. |

Hey!! I'm Cypress. I'm a sophomore at Bob Jones, and this is my second year writing for Patriot Pages. I'm in theater, and played Karen in Mean Girls! I love writing, so my strength lies in articles. I hope to pursue something that plays into that, like journalism or independent writing, but plans change!! Looking forward to another great year and lots of new people. Say "Hi" in the halls!!
