During Black History Month, students have been learning about contributions from Black Americans over the morning announcements, and Mrs. Jones even organized a door decorating contest to recognize this month here at Bob Jones.
From toys to blood banks, Black Americans have improved society. Here are other everyday inventions that you may not have known to be a part of black history.
Home Security System, 1966
Marie Van Brittain Brown began as a nurse while her husband was an electronic technician. The two lived in Queens, New York, where the crime percentage was high and Marie’s hours were long. She wanted a way to ensure that her home was safe from burglary and intruders. Using her husband’s electrical knowledge, she designed a device that would be attached to the front door of their home. This device would contain a camera, microphone, alarm, and four peepholes. It wasn’t until 2005 that Marie Van Brittain Brown’s invention came to life, but unfortunately, she passed away in 1999 and was not able to see the impact her device had on the world 20 years ago and the advancements made on it today. Her product has changed the lives of over 94 million homeowners making their homes feel safer and more secure.
Portable Air Conditioning Unit, 1945
Winner of the National Medal of Technology, Fredrick Jones invented mobile refrigeration. His invention changed the way we transport food and medicine. To accomplish this idea, he created the portable air conditioning unit. This invention was founded as ThermoKing and was mainly used in trucks allowing for food, blood, and medications to be transported to the military in WWI.
Ice Cream, 1880
Augustus Jackson created ice cream. He was the chef in the White House for twenty years. In 1880 he opened his own ice cream parlor in Philadelphia, and his ice cream became known as “Philadelphia Style.” He developed a method of mixing salt and ice to lower the freezing point making the ice cream smoother and creamier. He also invented the ice cream flavors strawberry, mint, and vanilla.
It is inspiring to see how African American inventors and their inventions have made an impact on all our daily lives. Stay tuned to the morning announcements for more about Black History.
