Guess what month it is? National Women’s History month! March is meant to celebrate and appreciate all of the important women in our lives.
It all started when Rosa Parks began a local celebration in her city in California. Then the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. According to this Women’s History resource, “The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women’s History Week celebrations the following year.” However, that wasn’t the end of it. In 1980, a bunch of women’s groups and historians successfully lobbied for national recognition. Then after, presidents continued to proclaim a National Women’s History Week in March until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month.”
Did you know that this year’s theme is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations,” and that means we must have some insight from some of our female educators! Mrs. Worley, an ELA teacher, stated, “I hope my students become critical thinkers that work to improve the world. I hope some of my organizational skills, love of animals, and love of music and movies rub off on them, too.”
Moreover, Women’s History Month is about any and all women that have made an impact on you, so we asked Bob Jones students about a woman who has impacted their lives. One student, Lily Shelton, says, “Mrs. Panagos is in general one of my favorite people in the world. She does so much for her students and her school, and I admire the way she simply lives her life. I’ve had her all four years of my high school career, and I don’t regret a second I spent in her classroom.” Another student, Drayton Walker, stated, “My mother. She served in the army for 20+ years and does everything she can to support me and my dreams/goals. She’s traveled with me to support and even supported me from a distance. She’s probably the reason I turned out to be so good and amazing, you know.”
Let’s just say, we will be appreciating the women in our lives even more. Happy Women’s History Month! Yay!
