People give terrible advice. Everybody, collectively, gives bad advice. It doesn’t really matter what they are talking about. It could be about anything: books, duck- related fatalities, the expiration date of common foods. Not once has anyone ever given me good advice on anything.
One thing I really need advice on is college. My entire life my education has been free, and in a few years, it will be insanely expensive. I’m going to have to invest thousands of dollars into this thing so I’d better get my money’s worth, but what does that mean?
I could get a job I hate but that gives me the money to pay off student loans. I could wear a suit and sit in a cubicle all day, or I could point to graphics during business meetings and say… stuff.
I could do something that I actually want to do but pays peanuts. I don’t want to be the person who takes out thousands of dollars in student loans only to end up driving a 15-year old car for the rest of my life because of crippling student loan payments.
Is there a place in between?
I don’t even try to ask for advice on what to do anymore because everyone says the same thing: “Oh, you don’t want to throw your life away, but don’t give up on your dreams.” That is literally the worst advice possible. I asked what path to take, and you’ve practically said both. Well, that’s just not an option.
My own advice would be to not take anyone’s advice on this. It’s your life. It’s your debt. It’s four years of your life. It’s the job you’ll be doing everyday.
I can only hope that I can figure it out for myself.
