First, it was the smartphone, then smart eye gear and now Smartwatches. Smartwatches are designed to go around your wrist and help you have a better relationship with your smartphone. They can give you important information without pulling your phone out such as text messages, email, notifications, weather, and (of course) time.
Smartwatches have actually been around for sometime now.
The First known smartwatch was the Pulsar by the Japanese company, Seiko. It came out in 1972 and was the first watch to have programmable memory. That company later released a different watch, the RC-1000, in 1984 that could actually connect to your PC.
Since then, big name companies have been rumored to be working with smartwatch prototypes, including Apple and Microsoft.
The Pebble, funded by Kickstarter, was released in early 2013. In April 2013, it became the second most crowd funded project with $10,266,844 pledged. The Pebble can sync and connect with your Android or iOS device. It sends its users text messages and email notifications using Bluetooth. The pebble currently comes with a $150 price tag. The pebble quickly became a success and a must have accessory for tech lovers.
On September 4, Samsung released its first smartwatch called the Galaxy Gear, which works with Android. It notifies you when you get new messages. You can make phone calls and take pictures with it. Sony also released its second smartwatch on September 4. The device sports a 1.6-inch touch-screen LCD display and connects to most Android phones via Bluetooth 4.0. The Sony accessory can also sync with your Facebook and Twitter apps. Unfortunately, it will not work with any iOS device.
Nissan recently announced that it would be the first car manufacturer to release a smartwatch in the near future so that drivers focus more on the road.
When asked about buying a smartwatch, Kameron Sauter said he would because “They look cool and have nice features that are worth looking into.” On the other hand, Jade Chambers said that she wouldn’t because she would probably lose and damage it.
How do you feel about smartwatches? Would you be willing spend around $200 on a smartwatch?
