Who hasn’t heard people arguing about Alabama and Auburn football? Or seen friends turn into enemies?
On Thursday, January 2nd, Oklahoma defeated Alabama 45-31 in the Sugar Bowl. The sugar bowl was senior quarter back AJ McCarron’s last game. He decided to skip the Senior Bowl and get ready for the NFL. Head coach Nick Saban has entered his 7th year of coaching for Alabama. He has a proven record of championship success, increasing Alabama’s winnings to 15 national championships.
“Bear Bryant was in the news all the time so I grew up following Alabama. As I got older and saw the success they had I became a bigger fan,” said James Clemens’ Vice Principal Mark Hodges. “Do I think they played their best game? No! I believe winning at the level they have been winning is hard to maintain. Not just from the physical aspects but from the mental aspect even more. People get complacent. You expect to win but you forget how you got to that level.”
“I like Alabama because I always enjoyed how the team was represented and liked by so many. I believe they had a good season, I was a little disappointed but I guess I’m so use to winning that it was hard to lose even two games,” said Alabama mom Colleen Vaughn. “I was devastated when we lost the Sugar Bowl and I felt like Alabama did not give it their all because it was not a national championship game.”
On January 6, Florida State beat Auburn in the BCS National Championship, also known as the Rose Bowl, scoring 34-31. Florida State had the country’s best player, Heisman Trophy winner Jamesis Winston as quarterback and the top-ranked scoring defense. Auburn had the nation’s best running offense, Quarterback Nick Marshmall and Heisman finalist Tre Mason at running back.
“My family are all Auburn fans. The bowl loss was hard but still felt good considering last season and I think they did give it their all although they started getting worse the second half. Luck or not I will take a win however they can get it,” said Auburn mom Pam Moss.
“I feel like our loss wasn’t really a loss because it was a big accomplishment for Auburn making it to the national championship,” said Bob Jones student Chandler Beatty.
