2014 has brought about many things– from countless resolutions, to post winter angst and even a new Powerpuff Girls special! YES, I SAID IT, A POWERPUFF GIRLS REBOOT. Earlier in December Cartoon Network debuted a trailer for the special, initiating the tagline “…And while a lot may have changed, we didn’t dare touch the formula,” many fans are shocked about its integration into CGI animation.
Samantha Butler, a junior at Bob Jones and avid Powerpuff Girls fan says,” I’m not sure how it’s all going to come together.. I mean, they’ve done reboots in the past, but many of them can never fully measure up to the original.” Though this is may be true, it can really stand for anything. For example, when older bands try to resurface after many years of extinction, their music tends to sound very different compared to when they were in their prime.
In the past, Cartoon Network gave us a show as brilliant and awesome as “Teen Titans” in 2003-2006. But, 7 years later, they attempted to resurface the series as “Teen Titans Go!” which seemed to be an overall failure with kids 14 and over. Not only that, but, they changed the show from being a dramatic superhero series to a slapstick, somewhat dimwitted comedy.
Also, many fans have concerns that the series won’t be the same because the original creator of the show, Craig McCracken, had absolutely no input on the decisions made. This reminds me of another time in 2006 when Japan thought it was a good idea to put out a magical girl anime based off of the Powerpuff Girls series entitled “Powerpuff Girls Z“. Though, the art was flawless and the idea behind it was interesting, it couldn’t be taken seriously because of the many plot changes put behind it.
Though that was a mistake and many reboots have made mistakes in the past, I’ve kind of moved past my judgment of the CGI integration and I’m actually very excited and curious to see what they have planned. It was announced that this was just going to be a special on Cartoon Network– just a simple TV movie and then that was it. BUT NO. I WANT MORE. I want a full revival of the series. I want Craig McCracken to come back to the series. I want a prim and proper reboot with the complete re-hiring of the original cast. I want the Powerpuff Girls back for good.
But for now, we’ll just have to settle for a one-night special. Fighting crime, for one last time, is our favorite trio!
