Freshmen? Or Freshmeat?
October 28, 2015
High school is filled with stress, especially for young freshmen. Dealing with a new school, new expectations, and worst of all… new students. In many movies and TV shows, freshmen are best known as the “bottom of the food-chain.” Surveys have shown that the #1 fear of freshmen are being shoved into a locker by the older students attending high school. Freshmen have been teased and looked down upon for as long as high school has been around, and here are some interviews that said why.
Aaron Decoux, a senior at Bob Jones, has no filter when discussing his opinion on freshmen. He said, “Freshmen are extremely obnoxious, lack maturity, and laugh at everything when it’s not even funny.” He also said that it’s not how they look that gives their age away, but it’s how they act. Freshmen in the hallway look lost, are loud, and bump into you. They don’t know what hallway traffic is or how to get through it. He also said that not all freshmen are like this, and the ones he likes are more mature than the others.
Aaron Norton, a senior at Bob Jones, also has strong opinions on freshmen. “I hate freshmen. Every, single, one. They’re obnoxious and annoying.” He has the same opinions as Aaron Decoux, for they both said freshmen are immature.
Sarah Lovelady and Viviana Miranda are junior girls and said freshmen can be very immature, but some just don’t grow up as quick as others. Freshmen are still growing up so their annoying stereotype is understandable. They also said that some freshmen aren’t annoying and are mature for their age. Lastly, they said that the “popular” kids in middle school come to high school, thinking that they’re going to be popular amongst all the grades.
Kemi Anderson is a sophomore girl and has a different opinion. She said, “Some stereotypes for freshmen are stupid. Stereotypes such as that every freshmen are annoying, even though other grades are too. People like to target freshmen for this stereotype because they just came from middle school. Freshmen are just like everyone else, except their just younger and aren’t as mature yet.”
Being a freshmen, I can honestly agree that my peers can be “obnoxious” and “annoying.” I believe this is because freshmen are younger and are still maturing. We are still at the age where we don’t necessarily care what older classmates think. This can be the reason for why freshmen have the stereotype of “obnoxious” and “loud.” Freshmen have had these stereotypes ever since high school was invented, and maybe these stereotypes hold true because we are holding onto the early-teen stage and our last days of childhood.
