Pink, pink, pink! Breast cancer awareness is in full swing here at Bob Jones High. The teachers the players and even the principal Mr. Parker are all supporting the awareness 100%. The principal even told the student body to “pink out” at the game Friday. The players wore pink socks, shoes, laces and pink athletic tape; some even wore pink gloves.
The bright pink colors are just for support there is a very dark side to the awareness. In theUnited States, one in every eight women will develop the cancer and 40,000 will be diagnosed this year. The percentage used to be one out of every nine. It’s a sad fact but almost every person knows someone who is affected by breast cancer.
There is no way of preventing it but there are some ways of catching it early. First, perform self-checks monthly and get professional checks yearly. But no male should think they are safe: the percentage might be less and it may be easier to check but don’t think it can’t happen to you. Betty Downy, a loving wife, mother and, my grandmother is just one of the many who has passed from this terrible cancer. If you need advice Nurse Nancy the nurse for Bob Jones is the person to go to.She says “Know your body, know what is normal for your body and if something changes get it checked out.”
HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America)an organization at Bob Jones set up fundraisers to collect money for the cause. They are making ribbons and selling them to the different classes. The class that raises the most money will get to leave the school a full 10 minutes early. Bob Jones is just one school in the U.S. raising money. Together we can fight this deadly cancer.
