Though the weather outside was frightful, the choirs were so delightful.
On December 9th, a mutual love of the holidays brought a sizeable swarm to the Bob Jones auditorium to see three groups perform. Bundled in heavy coats, concert programs in hand, the crowd filtered into their seats and watched the Discovery Middle School choir, the Women’s Choir, and the Patriot Singers sing their hearts out. The concert was stuffed with treats – the choirs sang everything from African spirituals, traditional Christmas carols, and lively Hanukkah tunes.
Even Mr. Parker stopped by to watch the show. He took a picture of the performers and had this to say on Twitter:
Led by Discovery’s Choral director, Ms. Jenkins, and the Bob Jones director, Mr. Fields, all three choirs delivered well above expectations as they sang their assigned pieces with gusto. At the end of the show, the Women’s Choir and the Patriot Singers joined together on stage for “Jingle Bells,” Handel’s “Hallelujah” chorus, and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” as a fitting end to a fun night.
“I liked the concert very much,” says Geraldine Pierce, an attendee. “I thought all of the performers had wonderful voices.”
Handel’s “Hallelujah” chorus was one of the many noteworthy moments of the night, for Bob Jones alumni (and any fans of the song, as well) were asked to join the group onstage to perform it. As is tradition, the entire auditorium rose for the duration of the song (according to legend, while attending a performance of Handel’s Messiah in London, King George II was so moved by the song that he stood, and the rest of the audience, obliged, stood with him). The sound was breathtaking, and the standing was worth it.
Mr. Parker was right – the future of the Discovery and Bob Jones choirs is surely as bright as their voices were that night.
