Ever wonder what that desk is for in the downstairs commons? It’s the Redstone Federal Credit Union, of course! This location of Redstone is operated by students under the supervision of school faculty. Students are able to open both a checking and savings account once they’re over the age of sixteen without a parent’s signature.
The credit union opened back in 2019 and was seen as “a great opportunity for students to get experience in dealing with money and real accounts,” says Asia Lovejoy, a junior vault teller and a recent hire. Here, teachers and certified faculty sponsors of RFCU watch over the students as they learn to deal with the responsibility of money in a real-life setting. They help their fellow peers deposit and withdraw funds into their accounts, supporting financial independence for the future.
Want to get a job here? It’s not hard to apply! Your peers at the bank applied for the Banking and Finance class that we offer here at Bob Jones. They met with our principal and other authorities from RFCU to get the “ok,” and over the summer, they received special training to learn the policies, security, and duties that play a part in working at a bank.
“We had a lot of people apply here last year,” said Karolyn Bodden, a student teller at the arsenal, “The job can be stressful at times, but the work is fun and easy.” Rest assured that the experience is something to look forward to. You make plenty of friends in a productive learning environment and even have the chance to apply for a few scholarships for college.
If you’re looking to simply set up an account here, the process is just as easy. You would need to bring some identification and an employee of the UAH Campus Branch needs to be present to fill out a form. Not to worry, though! Employees from the UAH Campus Branch visit a few times a week!
